Tommy T wasn’t narcing. He didn’t care what Stoner said. He was making a drawing that somebody was willing to pay him for. In fact, he’d had another look at the guy in the red-and-green cap, and he thought he’d done an even better job on him in the second sketch. He didn’t know why Jesse Brown Wolf would be interested. Probably just wanted to get Tommy T off his back about working for him. But Jesse’s purpose didn’t much matter. What mattered was the five bucks. He’d draw cars, cats, or naked women for the repairman for five bucks a shot. When Angela told him Jesse was coming over to work on the shower, Tommy T got busy with his new pencils.
And when Jesse came to the door, he was greeted with, “Got any cash on ya?”
That quick, he had the man digging into his pocket. Must have been some picture, because Jesse didn’t want change from the ten he handed over.
“You sure, man?” Tommy T said, barely controlling the childish yelp that was making his chest swell up. Yipping at his heels, Stevie seemed just as excited.
Jesse had to laugh as he leaned down to pat the dog. The kid was a hustler. “Darlene says you guys are still running your shower into her bathroom. Is that true?”
“Must be, if Darlene says.” In one fluid motion the boy swept the tail-wagging terrier into his skinny arms and stepped back, grinning playfully. “What are you gonna do about it?”
“Fix the damn thing, what else?” He lifted his toolbox, flaunting it as proof of his good intentions. Then he considered the drawing again. “You got something I can put this in? I hate to crease it.”
The boy’s dark eyes glowed big and bright with innocent gratification. “We save big envelopes that advertising stuff comes in sometimes. I’ll get you one.”
We. He’d said it easily, naturally, as though his life had always been entwined with the woman who lived there. Jesse smiled as he watched the boy slide on stockinged feet over the waxed wood of the short hallway, then disappear. He drew a deep breath, savoring the aroma of a home-cooked meal, the robust smell of beef and potatoes, the sweetness of apples and pastry crust all mingling in his nose and making his mouth water. He could hear Tommy T rummaging in a drawer in the back room, Angela’s room. The boy was home. This arrangement was working out just fine.
Angela came upstairs from Darlene’s apartment moments later to welcome him with the news that Tommy T was staying with her, at least for the time being, and that she had been appointed “captain of the safety patrol.” Her excitement was as infectious as the boy’s, her smile equally contagious. Jesse caught himself wearing one of his own when he headed into the bathroom.
As he went about his work he realized that the water problem wasn’t all that connected Angela’s bathroom with the one below it. The two apartments were becoming one household.
